Spatial Patterns of Microplastics in Surface Seawater, Sediment, and Sand Along Qingdao Coastal Environment

Coastal environments, ecologically fragile zones, are subjected to great human pressures, particularly, xenobiotic pollutants such as microplastics (MPs) and trace metals. Yet, the impact of anthropogenic intervention on spatial patterns MPs in different coastal environmental compartments Qingdao, a city located west Yellow Sea, is still unclear. Therefore, distribution, characteristics, diversity (? 50 µm) seawater, sediment, sand samples collected from 10 zones intervened by activities Qingdao environment were investigated. The abundance was 93.1 ± 63.5 items/m 3 which 4577 2902 items/kg sediments 3602 1708 beach sands. A analysis indicated that distribution characteristics MPs, including abundance, color, type, greatly varied among with extent activities. highest seawater detected abandoned aquafarm, followed harbors, beaches, estuary, sewage discharge areas, operational rural whereas MP order harbor, discharge, area, aquafarm. scenic recreational sands was, respectively, intertidal supratidal zone. transparent chlorinated polyethylene fragments relatively small size 50–100 ?m dominant environment. higher physicochemical characteristic terms size, shape, type aquafarms, than those other illustrated complexity pollution sources these zones. These results jointly aquaculture, navigation, tourism mainly determined Qingdao. also extend understanding inventory fate environment, thus providing important data establish effective strategies for abating marine ecosystems.
